THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF CAR WITH TWO POWER SOURCES; HOWEVER, THE COMBINATION OF PETROL/DIESEL AND ELECTRIC MOTOR IS SHAPING THE FUTURE OF MOTORING. THERE ARE THREE MAIN TYPES: MICRO, MILD AND THE SYSTEM WE EMPLOY: FULL HYBRID

MICRO HYBRID

Although not strictly a hybrid (electricity from the battery is not used to propel the car), what is more commonly known as 'Stop-Start' does enable a modest reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. When the car comes to a halt, the petrol/diesel engine is shut down (at traffic lights, for example) and re-starts only when the driver activates the accelerator. The engine is instantly re-started by the alternator, which is powered by the car's battery which, in turn, receives a small boost charge from energy recouped during braking

MILD HYBRID

There are two types of mild hybrid – parallel and series. A parallel mild hybrid uses the same ‘Stop-Start’ system as a micro hybrid plus it uses the electric motor to supplement the engine during acceleration. It cannot usually power the car by the electric motor alone. It is powered by a battery which is charged either by capturing energy usually lost through braking or by the engine slightly over-performing at cruising speed. A series mild hybrid propels the car by an electric motor which is charged by a petrol engine or during deceleration.

FULL HYBRID

The most sophisticated of all hybrid systems - and the one used in our cars - full hybrid cars can be powered by just the electric motor, the combustion engine or by both. Normally, when starting and driving at low speeds, the car is silently powered by the electric motor only - no CO2 emissions produced and no fuel used. The combustion engine seamlessly takes over at higher speeds and, when needed the electric motor provides extra power (when accelerating, for example). A full hybrid system intelligently selects the most appropriate power source and captures much more energy through regenerative braking to charge the battery, which powers the one or more powerful electric motors in the car.

THE HYBRID DIFFERENCE

REDUCED EMISSIONS

When running on electric power alone, no emissions are produced at all. When accelerating at speed, an electric boost complements the engine input.

EXHILARATING PERFORMANCE

Our full hybrid cars are dynamic and powerful - impressive acceleration from standing goes hand-in-hand with a dramatic power surge when accelerating at speed.

BETTER FUEL ECONOMY

As with emissions, the less the petrol engine is used, the better the fuel economy, and in a full hybrid car the petrol engine is used much less than in a conventional car.

DRIVING PLEASURE

Driving any of our full hybrids is a sheer pleasure. Impressively silent when starting off (the petrol engine is not normally used at this stage), as you accelerate, the petrol engine seamlessly takes over to power the car. When accelerating at speed, the electric motor provides an instantly commanding surge of power with impressive smoothness. And then there’s the immeasurable pleasure derived from simply knowing – knowing that you have some of the world’s most advanced automotive technology under your control.

NO PLUG
REQUIRED

Lexus Hybrid Drive never needs to be plugged in – that’s because the hybrid battery is re-charged during the course of driving. When braking, the electric motor goes into reverse, acting as an electric brake and generating electricity. This is fed into the hybrid battery to re-charge it. Simple and clever.
