A vehicle makes its greatest environmental impact when on the road. Lexus is constantly seeking new and better ways of minimising that impact, supporting the New Vehicle Zero CO2 challenge. One of the most important features of the Lexus UX 300e is the all electric powertrain which emits zero CO2 tailpipe pollution when driving.

    To reduce CO2 emissions, Lexus examines a vehicle’s entire life cycle, from design and production, to customer ownership and ultimate disposal and recycling. This scrutiny helps to achieve the aims of the Life Cycle Zero CO2 challenge. Each new model is developed to deliver better environmental performance than its predecessor. The car’s overall environmental impact is assessed in accordance with the international standard IS0 14040/44. See the results for the Lexus UX 300e in the graph.

    Lexus is committed to making manufacturing more environmentally efficient. As part of this commitment, manufacturing processes are continuously streamlined and simplified, moving towards the Plant Zero CO2 goal. The plant in Japan where the Lexus UX 300e is manufactured partially uses renewable energy and clean hydrogen. CO2 emissions are reduced by utilising photovoltaic power generation, geothermal energy, and hydrogen energy, with a goal of continuous zero-emission performance. Along with advanced manufacturing, the plant is also a model of advanced environmental design. In addition, stringent waste sorting and recycling programmes reduced emissions to zero in 2001 and ever since.


Under the Water Environment Policy, Lexus is assessing the impact on water environments and working to minimise those impacts from two perspectives. Firstly, the use of water is reduced as much as possible. Secondly, the wastewater is treated before being returned to the local water environment. The treated wastewater is clean enough for fish to thrive in it, which is then released to the nearby river. The local newspaper reported that the river ecology is recovering thanks to the plant's treated industrial wastewater.

    Through the Resource Recycling Challenge, Lexus focuses on the efficient use of resources in all areas of the business, in particular the parts and materials used to make vehicles. Stringent waste sorting and recycling programmes reduced emissions to zero in 2001 and ever since. The recoverability rate of the Lexus UX 300e exceeds 95%. This vehicle uses the latest Lithium-Ion battery technology, which is designed to last the entire lifetime of the vehicle and has been developed for minimum deterioration. Importantly for the planet, when the battery reaches the end of its life span, a take-back scheme ensures it is recycled safely and responsibly.

    The Lexus challenge to achieve Harmony with Nature is not just about protecting the world. It is about improving the environment, creating new habitats for plants and wildlife, fostering biodiversity and creating a sustainable society. In April 2010, the manufacturing plant of the Lexus UX 300e entered into an agreement with the cities of Miyawaka and Munakata regarding a cooperation and collaboration towards revitalising and contributing to the local community. Employees of the plant took part in various activities alongside the residents of these cities in an effort to strengthen their ties. This included participating as volunteers in environmental beautification activities in the region surrounding the company. In addition to enhancing awareness about the environment, these kind of activities stimulate communication among employees and people in the local community.
